The life of a web designer isn’t as easy as people see it. We all have our ways of doing things to arrive at our goal or purpose. We exhibit all kinds of habit at our work place or space. Some of these habits can also be a hindrance which can affect our productivity level at some point. Others might not see anything wrong with that but to be a professional or an expert you must perform your duty in manner that older would like to emulate.  Performing your duties or work in a right way makes you a star in your industry. As a web designer you must work professional even if you’re a starter in the industry. By doing so any other web designer who take over from where you left will have no questions to ask you in the future because of the way you did your work. I have written this article to showcase some the good habits professional web designer use.

Good Coding Habit Exhibited by Professional Web designers

1. Commenting and Indenting

Commenting and indenting your HTML, CSS and JavaScript documents makes you an excellent web designer or developer. You won’t enjoy the benefit it provides when working on small projects because it will be easy to locate the various sections of your code. Imagine you working a huge website for a client and you have written several lines of code without indenting or commenting your document and later, you have to change or edit some section the code. It will be messy and difficult to edit. This situation also welcomes bugs and makes your codes tedious to read. Commenting and indenting your web documents make your codes more readable and elegant. It also reduces the occurrence of bugs and make debugging very easy. As a web designer you should develop that habit of indenting and comment your codes. Giving a few space or tab and writing short and clear comments on your web document makes you a professional designer.

2. Using Frameworks and Tools

Frameworks and tools were not developed for fun. Their purpose is to help web designers build effectively and professionally. The clients we build for do not care about the technologies we use to meet their demands. What they care about is their website. The reason why frameworks and tools were built was to reduce the time we spend on building websites. These same framework reduces the possibility of including bugs in your codes. Why should you spend long hours on build a website while you can spend less time on the same website using frameworks and tools. There some popular frameworks you can use in your professional work. CSS has some notable frameworks like Bootstrap, Skeleton, Foundation, and Pure.  JavaScript has also got some popular ones like Angular, Meteor, React, and Backbone. There are a number of tools out there which can be of use to you like color pickers, font convertors, responsive test tools, image optimizers.

3. Using Multiple Web Browsers

The way browsers render web pages differ from one another. The most notorious browser Internet Explorer causes headaches to some developers. As a web designer you should develop that habit of working with multiple browser to have a clear view of how your pages are displayed. I won’t deny the fact that working with two more browsing isn’t easy at all. Doing so also pays a lot because if your website looks different on one browser you will be able to identify and rectify that error.

4. Using Different Screen Size

All web visitors do not have the same screen size you used when building your website. Someone might be viewing your website on a smartphone, tablet, 14 inches monitor or on a TV. Your website can be viewed on varied screen sizes. It is your duty to make sure your website doesn’t look awful on any display size. If you are the type that cannot work with two or more screens then consider using Google Chrome. Google Chrome is one of the browsers I use when coding websites. Its developer tools are awesome. You can use Chrome’s toggle device tool to test your how your webpages displays on different screen sizes. To use this tools open the developer tools by pressing f12 your keyboard, then hit on ctrl+shift+m to turn on the toggle device tool. After you have turned on the tool move to the]  chrome main windows to without closing the developer tools windows, now select the device you want to preview your page on. You can also add your on device by selecting edit from the drop down menu, then move to the developer tools windows, then click on add custom device and set the set width and height and also the name.

5. Organised Files and Folders

Another habit I think every web designer must learn from professional web designers is to keep their files and folders well organised. Organising your files in folders enables you to identify your documents easily. You should have separate folder for images, CSS files, JavaScript file and other files needed for the website.

6. Avoid Working under Stress

Working under stress can reduce your productivity level as a web designer. Stress is a bad condition which must be avoided by anyone. This often arises when you have to deliver a service to a client within a limited time period. Working under such condition even makes things worse than they were before. Stress can cause you to be tired, lose concentration and also become sick. To cope with such condition avoid working when you feel you need to take a break, talking to other people helps to release stress, taking regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

It won’t be easy practicing these habit overnight. But as time goes on things will be begin to change and you will start to adopt these habits.
